F. DAHIS & F. DOERMER. MENSTRUAL INSTRUMENT. No Patented July 31 1860. )jtitn ess es: fnvei2'1c. c"geim UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. FLORIAN DAHIS AND F. DOERMER OF BROOKLYN NEW YORK. CATAMENIAL BANDAGE. Specification of Letters Patent No. dated July 31 1860. To all whom it may concern: Be it known that we Fr oRIAN DAIHIS and FREDERIK DOERMER both of the eastern district of the city of Brooklyn in the county of Kings and State of New York have invented a new and useful Instrument to be Worn by Femalesfor the Reception of the Menstrual Discharges and we do hereby declare that the following is a full clear and exact description of the same reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification said drawing representing a perspective view of the instrument. To enable others to make and use our invention we will proceed to describe its construction and operation. A is the main spring made of a form to embrace the hips and opening at the back and covered and wadded with some soft substance to make it comfortable to the wearer. B is the cup of indiarubber or other ma terial for containing the sponge or other ab sorbent C which is confined therein by one or more light straps a a of indiarubber. D E is the spring for attaching the cup B to the center of the front of the main spring A. This spring D E is made of two sepa 30 rate pieces of steel of which the upper piece D which is nearly straight is attached to the spring A by two screws c c passing through slots d d provided in the said piece D and screwing into tapped holes in 35 the spring A and the lower piece E which is more curved to pass down the lower part of the abdomen and the pubis is jointed to the upper piece D by a pin b which admits of a lateral movement of the two pieces rela 40 tively to each other. The screws and slots d d permit the cup to be adjusted relatively to the main spring A to adapt the instrument to the size and form of the wearer. When it is properly adjusted the spring A is placed around the 45 hips with the spring D E in front and the former adjusted to a proper place on the hips to bring the cup and sponge to such a position that the latter fits without irritating pressure against the external orifice of the vagina. While thus worn the flexibility of the spring D E in one direction and the movement provided by the pivot b in another direction permits the necessary Movements of the body without displacing the cup and sponge. The sponge may be taken out and washed as often as may be required during the menstrual period and at the termination of such period the sponge and the cup may be washed and the instrument placed away until again required when it is ready for instantaneous application. The instrument is far more convenient of application and comfortable to wear than the means and appliances heretofore used for the same purpose. Having thus described our invention we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent as an improved article of manufacture A menstrual instrument composed of a cup B springs D E and a main or girdling spring A the parts being made and combined as herein shown and described.
